Automotive Head-Up-Display inspection systems

As from 2004, the Munich atuomobile manufacturer BMW has used with the full-graphic Head-Up-Display (HUD) a technology, which projects driver information (speed, navigation etc.) via a mirror optics and reflections onto the windscreen directly in the eye of the driver.

This technology requires an exactly coordination between the projector, which is lower into the dashboard, and the projector screen, the windscreen. Image defects can occur as a result of form deviations of the mirror and/or of the windscreen.

As of 2002, GEFASOFT has realized and continuously developed for this purpose a complex image processing system for the quality check of the ready assembled HUD. The system is able to record and when appropriate to adjust the virtual picture of the HUD on size accuracy of the different quality-relevant image parameters.

In the meantime, we are, due to this innovative image processing technology, validated at the most HUD-System users worldwide.

Our HUD-Systems are used in line speed as well as in the final assembly of the automobile manufacturer, as well in the glass production. Moreover, it is also used in rework places and in measuring laboratories.

Warping

After the assembly of the HUDs in the car together with the windscreen, distortions of the projected virtual image arise according to the component and assembly tolerances.

The GEFASOFT HUD inspection system takes pictures with CCD cameras of the Eyebox pictures from special projected test samples in different positions. It evaluates these picture with regard to distortion, trim, ghost, as well as further quality-relevant criteria.

The data of the actual distortion are transmitted via a vehicle interface to the projector, which produces a correct image. The so-called Warping enables the driver a widely distortion-free presentation of the virtual image, without referring to extreme and expensive accuracy requirement of the involved components.

The algorithms are adjusted to the particular OEM specification.

The cameras are calibrated via a type-independent reference target.

Platform: MS Windows 7 32-or 64 bit

The integration in the production takes normally place in inspection systems at the end of the assembly. Thereby the Warping is performed in line speed parallel to the test process for example driver-assistance-system. GEFASOFT functions here as a supplier for re-known manufactures of FAS and similar test benches.

Windshield test bench

For the HUD used windshields, a special construction is needed to avoid the double images ("Ghost") caused by the multilayer construction of a windshield. The herein used production processes are hard to master and require a complete quality check.

For this, GEFASOFT provides complete test systems for the glass industry. The systems enable a test of the windshields according to individual OEM targets to 100% and permit the reduction of rejects by a short control loop. Complaints and returns can be completely avoided.

A GEFASOFT windshield test bench allows a cycle time, depending on the variant, between 8 and 17 seconds with simultaneously flexibility by the option to be converted for different glass types.

The integration in the products can be done inline or offline. The communication of test- and tracingdata via customized interfaces is provided regular and flexible.

Future

By now, the HUD-displays just show static information. In the future, however so-called contact analogue information for scenarios, which take place outside of the car, will be displayed. For Example, warnings about a person, who is moving on the roadside, won´t be placed only as a static warning symbol in the report bar. Such information are rather placed where they are located from the driver´s view.

In the range of the HUD-inspection result new tasks, also future extensions of the GEFASOFT HUD Inspection portfolio with a variety of complex applications, by which we are already in development.
