LASER WELDING OF METAL FOR INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

For over 30 years, we have supported companies in integrating and automating precision laser technology in their production lines.

Laser welding of metal enables high-strength joints with minimal heat input. Modern laser systems ensure stable processes, high flexibility, and consistently high seam quality—even for complex geometries and sensitive components.

With a focus on reproducibility, component flexibility, and integrated quality assurance, GEFASOFT, as an experienced machine builder, develops software- and vision-assisted laser welding systems for industrial production. Depending on requirements, we tailor our standard platforms to your processes or implement custom solutions.

OUR PROCESSES IN LASER WELDING OF METAL

CONDUCTION
WELDING

In conduction welding, the laser energy is coupled specifically into the material surface, melting the material locally. The resulting melt joins the components without deep penetration of the laser beam.

This process is particularly suitable for applications with high requirements for surface quality and low seam depths of up to around 1 mm. The controlled energy input produces clean, uniform weld seams with minimal spatter formation.

Advantages:

  • Very small heat-affected zone
  • Minimal component distortion
  • High-quality, visually clean seams
  • Ideal for thin-walled components and visible welded joints

Typical applications:

  • Precision welding of thin-walled metal components
  • Visible seams in the electronics and consumer goods industries
  • Housings, covers, and design components
  • Applications with high requirements for appearance and surface quality
DEEP-PENETRATION WELDING
(KEYHOLE WELDING)

In deep-penetration welding, higher laser power is used, causing the material to vaporize locally and form a so-called vapor capillary (keyhole). This enables deep penetration of the laser beam into the material and thus greater welding depths.

This process is particularly suitable for stable, high-strength joints in thicker materials or safety-critical components.

Advantages:

  • Large penetration depths at high speed
  • High strength of the welded joint
  • Suitable for complex geometries
  • Efficient for automated series processes

Typical applications:

  • Welding of structural and load-bearing components
  • Automotive and supplier industry (e.g., battery modules, body-in-white)
  • Mechanical engineering and metalworking
  • Components with high requirements for strength and process reliability
